My Magic Glasses

When I'm out on a shoot, I feel like I'm looking at the world through a pair of magic glasses. Sometimes real life looks less than amazing, and a photograph can need a little help to give it personality.

The first part to the art of photography is getting the exposure and making sure the framing is good. But, the second part of the art is all about taking the image and processing it to look the way the photographer envisioned it to be.

Here's some quick before & after comparisons from Jenna & Ellery's wedding in Steinbach.

Faces are too dark in the BEFORE. But, I have to be careful to not overexpose when I shoot this kind of shot because I wanna get that nice deep blue and turn the sun into a starburst :-) After processing, the faces are nicely balanced out and we have a blue sky that's even deeper than it was originally:


Too much yellow in the light in "real life" here. Some color corrections help make this crispy clean :-)


I love long exposures like this when we get to see motion in the shot. But, the color of light in this building is simply BLAH!! After cleaning up the color I got aggressive with the dynamic range to give it some edge.


This shot need some punch to make it come to life...


Real life colors are not very interesting here. I think the final version has much more edge and personality.
